MIXTAPE: “THE CATEGORY IS DANCE” Millennial *bangerz-with-a-z*

I made y’all something. How about two hours and seven minutes of music that’ll make you radiate joy despite yourself, make your body do that weird twitch thing when you’re trying so hard not to dance in public to music no one else is hearing, and most of all fire you up. We’ve got work to do, my friends, all of us no matter where we find ourselves. Whether you’re commuting, doing chores, errands, but especially if you need to work out some of that energy building up in us whether we recognize it or not.

How’s this for a setlist (in no particular order):

Beyoncé, The Veronicas, Fall Out Boy, Madonna, The Killers, Herb Morand and The Harlem Hamfats, Christina Aguilera, Little Simz, Chloë, Doomtree, Nicki Minaj, Jack White, Megan Thee Stallion, Doechii, Robin S., Azaelia Banks, Bessie Smith, BIA, Jennifer Hudson, shygirl, Lana Del Rey, Kelly Rowland, Girls Aloud, Bashar Murad, Florrie, Kesha, Destiny’s Child, Charli xcx, and one song from each of Lady Gaga’s albums in anticipation of the release of MAYHEM on Friday (3/7).

This is a dizzying list of artists ranging from the 1920s to a few weeks ago, but far be it from me to tell you how to consume music, so I’ll just say everything here has an order, nothing is accidental, and if I were you I’d just push play and get ready for surprise after surprise with a flow from one unexpected song to the next. (To be honest after building this mixtape that’s the experience I wish I could have with it…)

We need music now more than ever. We need to dance now more than ever, to feel relentless joy despite it all now more than ever. I’ve been drowning myself in news, podcasts, The Guardian and ProPublica, r/fednews, so much mess. I need to have my mind filled with something beautiful, something worth fighting for, and I think you do too. So I made you a playlist, and I’m already working on another one for next week.

I’m sharing it on iTunes and Spotify

I hope it brings you joy, maybe occasionally some nostalgia, maybe a few tears. Anyway, I hope it makes you smile at least a few times. 🖤

And yeah, this is the cover!
