I want to hear Palestinian laughter—and not bitter, cynical laughter, but genuine joy

Watching Al Jazeera English this morning, like every morning since October, and it just occurred to me during his report on an aide convoy coming under IOF fire at the Kuwaiti roundabout, that I’ve never heard Tareq Abu Azzoum laugh. I bet his laugh is musical, contagious, uniquely his. Randomly that made me start tearing up.

Pretty sure also Nida Ibrahim has got to have a crazy-loud laugh that fills a whole room.

Even as I’ve never seen so many Palestinians all at once (thank the gods for AJ), I want to know Palestinians living. It’s why I’ve flown a Palestinian flag from wherever I’ve rented since 2022. Living is what the whole struggle is about.

I’ve heard former colleagues saying Shireen Abu Akleh had a great laugh, but I can’t find clips of her laughing, or even reporting, except her last report and of course tons of reports about her death. (And isn’t it amazingly revelatory that despite being so widely publicized there’s still no justice for Shireen?) But I want to know her alive!

Seriously though, I’m trying to find clips of Shireen Abu Akleh’s memorable moments for a novel I’m working on right now: it’d be really handy to be able to reference them.

Anyway, I can’t wait for the decades to come when singing and laughter will fill the air of free Palestine. 🖤
